Dry skin (cutaneous xerosis) is often associated with poor care, seasonal variations or external influences, rarely a dermatological condition, often atopy.
Everyone has gone through episodes of exaggerated dryness of the skin as a result of exposure to sunlight or inappropriate care.
However, there are also dermatological conditions manifested by this symptomatology (atopy, dermatitis, psoriasis, ichthyosis, etc.) and a specialized diagnosis with correct treatment is needed. Skin dryness can range from mild, dehydrated skin and unpleasant feeling of constriction to severe forms of cracked, flaky, reddened skin (eczema) and itching (pruritus) sensation.
Skin dryness is more pronounced at the extremities (hands, calves, legs, lips) and age extremes (children and the elderly)
