Laser treatment for scars and rejuvenation

The CO2 laser is one of the most used lasers in the field of dermatology. We use a platform from the Alma Laser portfolio, together with other laser technologies provided by the same leader in the laser technologies sector. It generates an energy with infrared wavelength (10600 nm), such wavelength being very well absorbed by the water.

As the skin contains a large amount of water, the CO2 laser is used both for the ablation (destruction) of benign skin lesions (papillomaviruses, warts, seborrheic keratoses, hemangiomas, etc.) and in aesthetic dermatology, especially in the treatment of scars and rejuvenation.

The he fractional CO2 laser is used to improve the aesthetic appearance of the skin, treat fine wrinkles, photo-aging (premature aging caused by exposure to UV), uneven pigmentation, uneven skin, scars (post acne, post burn, post surgery) at the face, neck, cleavage and hands level.

It acts by creating micro injuries of the skin through energy micro fascicles (fractional) that trigger a healing response by stimulating the synthesis of collagen and elastin. The result is a firmer, younger, tighter skin, with a more homogenous aspect and even pigmentation.

It may take 4-6 sessions for optimal results, usually performed every 4-6 weeks.

The post acne scars are improved after one CO2 laser treatment session.

There are situations where a complex protocol, including vascular laser therapy, is indicated when residual lesions with erythema (redness), peelings, microneedling, or other minimally invasive injectable therapies (mesotherapy, hyaluronic acid injection) are associated.

With all these techniques at hand we manage to significantly improve this condition that had no solving a few years ago.

FAQ

The fractional CO2 laser is a state-of-the-art laser whose laser beam is divided into many smaller beams. This pixelized laser wave removes controlled areas of skin in the form of multiple microscopic burning columns, generating a healing response, with collagen and elastin creation. The result of the treatment is a more aesthetic, younger skin.

The fractional CO2 laser is used in the treatment of:

  • scars (post-acne, post-surgery)
  • stretch marks
  • rejuvenation (fine lines, photo aging, solar lentigo)
  • laser blepharoplasty (correction of laxity, eyelid wrinkles)

Before you start, your skin will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution and an anaesthetic cream shall be applied for 20-30 minutes. The procedure is performed and an antibiotic cream and a photoprotection cream are applied after the procedure.

Usually, for optimal results, 3-4 sessions every 4 weeks are required; during the initial medical exam with the dermatologist, he/she will determine the treatment protocol depending on the problem being treated and its severity.

After performing a fractioned CO2 laser session, the skin is red, with spotted peels; sometimes patients describe the feeling of mild stinging or a “grasp” feeling. The full recovery period varies between 5-10 days depending on the protocol recommended by the dermatologist. Your dermatologist will recommend you to use a combination of healing creams and photoprotection.
